“Breezeway Mural”

VCA’s breezeway was architecturally a clever way of dealing with traffic flow around the Kay White Theater without adding the huge expense of more interior volume. The breezeway wall was intentionally left bare, white, with the hope that someone would make something on it. No takers, so I finally agreed to research and create an historical timeline of Center across the long expanse. I knew about the history from drawing the installation just inside. Using giant Sharpies, I drew the mural incrementally over a couple of months, hoping that kids looking from the school buses lined up at the intersection every morning might notice how the island’s history evolved. It worked! First, there was a leaping cougar; later a deer being leapt on appeared, and so on. I’ve spoken to lots of kids who remember waiting to see the next addition from their bus window.
