I’m sitting on the edge of my seat in front of my computer connected to the live stream from Mars. Okay, there’s a two-hour delay, but still, I’d just spent a couple of months learning everything I could about the remarkable Mars Perseverance Rover and its mission. Now, I’m waiting to see if it lands safely and deploys a new age of discovery, or ends up as a small crater. The thrill of watching this successful landing is one of the highlights of my career. One of the first big projects my father worked on was creating cameras for Viking, the NASA mission that took the first pictures of the Martian surface — long, narrow, reddish orange images of a rocky field. He would’ve been thrilled to know that I drew Perseverance.
