I am embarrassed to admit I never really engaged with Star Trek: The Next Generation. I was working on cars at that point, and Weber carburetors seemed more important than Dilithium Crystals. Still, I was excited to draw NCC – 1701 – D and Picard. This Enterprise is so much bigger. I’m still amused that both vessels appear very aerodynamic, which wouldn’t really be necessary in space. There is, however, one little known aerodynamic exception that surprised me: The main fuselage disc is designed to separate from the rest of the craft in an emergency and enter atmospheric space. Did you know that?
