I tried to turn this job down four separate times. The art director kept coming back and pushing his great “Coffee Cup Cutaway“ idea. A white paper cup full of brown liquid? What’s there to cut away to? At the time I was uninspired, but I’m extremely glad I took the job. In a panic, I developed a drawing style specifically for this job, and it’s the style I still use today. Starbucks was a small company back then, but this series of cup images had a very long run and has probably been responsible for at least half of my referral work. I’ve learned something from each job: Listen to the art director they can help – a lot.
