Nintendo asked for a “cutaway” image of their new console (remember the first Mario?), but they needed the drawing to be bright, colorful lines on a jet black background. This was all before computers so, initially, I said that would be virtually impossible. Colored pencil on black paper wasn’t going to give them the snap they were looking for. Then inspiration struck: What if I drew the image in negative color on white paper, then printed it as a negative to create a rich black background, but with correctly-colored, bright lines? The image I drew is on the left. The printed reversed version is on the right. It worked incredibly well. We were all a little shocked.
