Like a lot of my peers graduating college in ’76, I was car crazy. My first ride was an MGB, then an Alfa, then a Porsche…car crazy. All I wanted to do was draw cars for my favorite magazine: Road & Track. I gathered my best examples and snail-mailed them to the R&T art director. Imagine my disappointment when I received back a simple but solid, “No thanks.”  Oh, well. You don’t go into art or illustration unless you can develop pretty thick skin, so I walked it off and got busy making illustrations of lots of other things. I eventually switched hobbies from old cars to old sailboats. After 30 years of cruising adventures, we sold our beloved “Courageous,” and I found myself again staring blankly at the intersection of Boat & Car: which way to turn? That’s when Road & Track contacted me, out of the blue, about creating a bunch of images of my all-time favorite cars: “Is there a chance you’d like to draw a Ferrari 275 GTB-4, etc., etc., etc.,?”  “Uhhhh, yeah!”

My feelings had healed decades ago, and this contact came to me as a dream would: 45 years later, R&T was calling me. Damn. What an honor! I think I’ll go for a drive.
