“Acropolis”
National Geographic
Pencil on Film & Diazo

I used to call it “people day.” That’s the day I would populate my large-scale drawings of architectural sites for National Geographic with hundreds of tiny people — just look at them all! Horses and goats and cows, too. When Nat. Geo. called and asked, “Could you draw the Acropolis?” “ Sure!” “In the time of Pericles?” “Sure!“ Then I hung up and looked up Pericles.
I depicted the Athenian Procession, the crucial annual event at the Acropolis, in the time of Pericles, as depicted on the Elgin Marbles. The Parthenon, on the Acropolis, is a temple to Athena. I made the detailed pencil drawing, then made a diazo print, which is similar to blueprints only with a sepia tone to give the image a rougher, older look. I then used colored pencil on top to make the final art.
